Have you tried teeth whitening many times without success? Do you have brownish or whitish patches on your teeth that just don’t change, no matter what you’ve tried? Have you tried the In-Office “Laser” Whitening, the super-high concentration gels, the Crest White Strips……EVERYTHING…..only to see your teeth the same after 2 weeks? If you’re looking for a Charlotte dentist who can help, read on.

One of the most common frustrations experienced when people want to whiten their teeth, occurs when there are whitish and/or brown spots, because it can be very difficult to get the spots “evened out,” and with brown spots, it seems they just don’t whiten at all! Or do they…………? 😉

What Causes Brown and White Spots on Teeth?

Besides the usual causes of tooth stains (coffee, dark sodas and juices, tea, etc), there are several causes of really hard-to-get-out tooth discoloration:

  • Excess fluoride intake as a child
  • Rheumatic fever as a child
  • Tetracycline antibiotics taken when young

Conventional whitening has difficulty with these stains, because they are deep inside the teeth. But can it be done, and how?

Teeth Whitening for Resistant Stains

Two tubes of MI Paste dental cream, one red and one white, with plant illustrations.

First of all, it can be done, but only by a dentist, because a strong acid must be used to open the enamel “pores,” so to speak, which will remove the dark mineral stains. The key, though, is that the right minerals must immediately be applied to replace what is taken out. We use a remineralizing paste called MI Paste Plus, which contains calcium, phosphates, and fluoride in just the right concentrations to remineralize teeth. We do this literally moments after the acid etch is washed off, so you don’t walk around with weakened teeth. Additional applications of the MI Paste are done by the patient every day, too, and the patient can even whiten their teeth, too.

Typically, this process has to be repeated several times, and the darker the teeth are to begin, the longer it will take and the more office visits are needed. But the great news is that it CAN be done!

Teeth Whitening Example by a Charlotte Dentist

Stacey was told she needed either bonding or porcelain veneers to get rid of these incredibly dark brown spots, but she didn’t want her teeth drilled, but regular whitening hadn’t worked at all. It took 4 in-office visits over 4 weeks, with at-home whitening using Opalescence Whitening Gel and at-home applications of MI Paste Plus.

Before and after photos of teeth, showing the removal of brown spots.

Needless to say, Stacey is thrilled with her smile now! And I thought it very cool when I showed these pictures to a visiting dental sales rep and former hygienist, so she knows a bit about cosmetic dentistry, but she thought we had done porcelain veneers for Stacey! She was shocked to learn that there was no drilling or dental work done at all.

As I discussed in my last post about Cosmetic Dentistry: Invisalign and a Dental Implant, you don’t always need teeth whitening or porcelain veneers to make a smile more beautiful, nor does it have super expensive, take a long time, or require drilling on your teeth. Sometimes, cosmetic dentistry can be as simple as fixing a gummy smile with laser gum therapy services. Gummy Smiles Don’t Need Veneers – They Need Less Gums! This is honestly one of my favorite kinds of cosmetic dental treatment, but it’s one that many dentists aren’t aware can be done so easily. I wrote about another one of our patients, who still comes in for her check-ups every 6 months like clockwork for the last 5 years), and her Cosmetic Gum Lift, back in 2009. She still can’t believe just how much of a difference it made, and this young lady now feels much the same way. To be completely honest, the change in Tiara’s smile could have been even bigger, but to do so would have required major jaw surgery, and that isn’t something she wanted. But she has been unhappy with her smile for so long, and it’s easy to understand why, right? So what we did is called a “Esthetic Crown Lengthening,” or in normal English, a “gum lift.” Basically, this involves using a laser to recontour the gums (remove the excess) up to the level they should be, and then to gently lift the gums to allow removal of the excess bone that was also covering her teeth. The second part isn’t always necessary, because there’s not always extra bone, but when there is, it’s easy-to-do and painless, because the bone has no nerve endings. A New Smile Fast This photo was taken just 10 days after Tiara’s Gum Lift Procedure, and look what a huge difference it made! She was just ecstatic and couldn’t stop thanking us and smiling. We all know that it’s still not perfect, but she’s not interested in the jaw surgery. But what it is, is a HUGE improvement, don’t you agree?
